Harvey E. Kapnick gifted $5 million in 2000 which enabled the garden board to purchase the land. The garden closed from June 2008 to November 2009 for major development work. It showcases plants native to the tropics and subtropics from the 26th latitude north (the latitude of Naples) and the 26th latitude south. The Brazilian Garden was designed by Raymond Jungles and the focal point is an original ceramic mural by Roberto Burle Marx. There is also a Children's Garden, Caribbean Garden and a 90 acre nature reserve. The Florida Garden and Asian Garden are still in development.

Although very much in the making, this is going to be a really fabulous garden! The Children's Garden is quite exceptional and will entertain both young and old with its butterfly house and boardwalk.
The Brazilian Garden is wonderful too, with the marvellous ceramic mural by Roberto Burle Marx.
Part of the joy of visiting is the wide open spaces and the feeling that you are involved in something new and dynamic. Charming guides and very helpful staff, plus a really informative website.
I shall enjoy watching this garden grow in the next few years because it can only go from strength to strength.
