Mount Royal Cemetery is one of the oldest rural garden cemeteries in North America, using an idea, from Pere Lachaise in Paris and promoted in the writings of J C Loudon, that cemeteries could be beautiful gardens of meditation. Mount Royal was made on the site of old farms, with a series of paths and terraces following the mountain's topography. There is natural woodlands, crab apple trees and Japanese lilacs.
