Mohonk Mountain House Gardens

Gardenvisit Editorial

A gigantic mountain resort hotel, integrated with cliffs and forests and overlooking a lake. Mohonk was conceived by Alfred H. Smiley in 1869 when he came to the Shawangunk Mountains for a picnic. He and his brother planned a peaceful retreat where people could enjoy the beauty of nature in a spectacular setting. Garden design was close to Smiley's heart and the gardens at Mohonk have won many awards. One can see French and Italian influences, but primary conception is picturesque and the romantic combination of towers and scenery is essentially German. There is an annual Garden Holiday held at Mohonk at the end of the summer when the gardens are at their best. The program includes guided walks, talks and workshops.
