Dan Kiley traced the genesis of his 1953 design the European gardens he had seen in 1945 'From that point onward, I experimented with the translation of various classic elements into a modern spatial sensibility' . The result is widely regarded as a modern classic: structures, planting, paving and pool treated as compositional elements in an abstract composition.
