We spent several hours touring this magnificent site, first on a guided tour and then on our own. Our docent pointed out a plant reputed to be the one of four camellias given to Henry Middleton in 1786 by the famed French botanist Andre Michaux when he visited the area on a search for new plants on behalf of Louis XVI. We had a delicious lunch at the restaurant which has beautiful views of the lake. Note: Middleton Place has something that its English cousins can't match--alligators. We saw two small ones that day, having been warned where to look for them by the docent.
