Located in the foothills north of Lucca, you can easily picture the beauty of Villa Reale when you enter the main gate and gaze across the front lawn toward the villa. This is a large garden, but is pretty well maintained. Be sure to see the water garden behind the villa. I recommend visiting if you are interested in landscape design and enjoy envisioning what a historic garden might have looked like 200 years ago.

Visited Villa Reale last week, a super place, especially after having watched an Italian garden programme in England with Monty Don, and to follow in his footsteps. The outdoor theatre is just awesome, my children of 7 and 11 thoroughly enjoyed it too. Investigate behind the aqua theatre as well, this can be missed if you just walk past the Villa. I just hope they have enough throughput of visitors to the gardens to help maintain the upkeep of such a wonderful corner of the world. Long may such glorious places continue.......

A lovely garden well worth a visit, if you can get in.... When you arrive, you will see the sign for Villa Reale, and a 'no entry' sign, but no obvious entrance. In front of you are two gatehouses. Knock on the door to the one on the right. I went in and woke up an old man who was asleep on a chair. He sold us two tickets for the garden, pressed his magic button, the gates opened an we walked in. Inside is a great unvisted garden (about 10 other people there in total). There is a fantastic vista from the villa to a small lake at the bottom which must be half a mile long. Other parts of the garden include fountains, a lake and pan's grotto. It must have been amazing in its heyday a few hundred years ago.
