Rated a Garden of National Significance by NZGT, the gardens surround a 19th century castle on the Otago Peninsula, with panoramic views over the peninsula and the Pacific Ocean. When the Barker family purchased Larnach Castle in 1967, the grounds were entirely overgrown. The last 40 years have seen the gardens carefully restored. The gardens feature a Rock Garden, South Seas Garden, Rainforest Garden, marble fountain and wishing well. It is the unique personal vision of Castle owner Margaret Barker and reflects her interest in Gondwana and the South Seas plants. Lodge accommodation is available in the gardens.
