Kruidentuin Leuven Botanical Garden

Gardenvisit Editorial

Belgium's oldest botanic garden has a good plant collection and borders planted with a view to colour effects - and nor are the garden managers shy about traditional displays of horticultural expertise (eg ornamental bedding).

It is not a herb garden, it is a Botanical garden and the correct name is Kruidtuin.
With perrenials, interesting old trees and an English style garden.
There is a lot to see: a famous Orangerie, and very beautiful seasonal settings.

I have visited this garden many times at different times of the year and it continues to fascinate me. I believe that it is quite small as botanical gardens go, but the designers over the years have packed a great deal of plant material into a very small area. The garden includes a lovely large pond, with small creeks feeding into it, a shady set of paths behind the pond, a naturalized area that has been kept quite simple, perennial beds running along a tall brick wall, including many the the famous camilia collection a small intimate and formal garden off the main garden, a clever fruit tree area where space has been maximized by espaliering all the trees, a clever central perennial bed using a concrete grid that permits water plants, perennials for sun and shade to live side by side, a small rock garden near the entrance and a beautiful historic building that houses tropical plants.

The designers have used water features, a wide variety of plants, shrubs and trees, lovely well placed sculptures, and many comfortable benches to enhance the visitor's experience.

It is a botanic gem and well worth a visit.

In case anyone doesn't know, Kruiden Tuin means Herb Garden.
