Knebworth House Garden

A large park with a Victorian house and garden, once the home of a romantic novelist (Edward Bulwer-Lytton) and a Viceroy of India (Lord Lytton). Edwin Lutyens married a Lytton and modified the garden. There are 18 different "rooms" including the Sunken Lawn with avenues of pollarded limes, the Rose Garden, the Gold Garden, the Brick Garden, the Wilderness where 72 life-size dinosaurs can be found grazing amongst the rhododendrons and the redwoods, a pergola designed by Lutyens, and a herb garden designed by Gertrude Jekyll in 1907 and made in 1982. The garden is not as romantic as its design history or its family history: Bulwer-Lytton wrote The Last Days of Pompeii and Lord Lytton held the Great Delhi Durbar of 1877.
