Gardenvisit Editorial

A Palladian house, by James Gibbs c1728, in a landscape park. The Kelmarsh Hall garden has yew hedges and clipped box. Norah Lindsay worked on the design.

Head Gardener's Comment

If you haven't visited for while, we hope you'll find that we've made steady progress with our renovations. Still plenty to do, especially in the walled garden, but our team of trusty volunteers are helping to bring it alive with their veg production (generally on sale thursdays). Kelmarsh is such a beautiful place, we hope we can share it with you-whether you want a sunny spot to read your newspaper undisturbed or are keen to badger us about a new plant you've spotted, I'm sure you'll feel better for coming!

History

The raffish charm gardens of Kelmarsh Hall offer visitors an insight into two of the most talented decorating spirits of the Twentieth Century.

The sparkling Nancy Lancaster, honed her English Country House style at Kelmarsh employing her society contact Mrs Norah Lindsay, designer to the Prince of Wales and his set, to work her romantic spell on the gardens.

Visitors to Kelmarsh can now enjoy the recreations of her virtuoso borders and rose gardens as well as the productive beauty of the enchanting walled garden and timeless rural views.

There’s something to delight. The refined decorum of tulips and fritillaries in Spring leads on to the full blown excesses of high summer and a profusion of cut flower and autumnal abundance.
