The Jardim Botanico gardens are simply delightful. Even during the cooler months, October through to March, there is plenty of colour on display.
However, anyone with walking difficulties may find the grounds challenging as they have been terraced into the steep hillside.
If you visit during the winter months, take something warm to wear even if the sun is hot down in Funchal city centre - the altitude of the gardens certainly chills the air.
After your visit, think about getting the cable car up to Monte and visiting the equally lovely Monte Palace tropical Gardens.
The cable car terminal is situated at the top of the Jardim Botanico grounds.

(5.0/5)Excellent visit but go on your own rather than on an organised tour to enjoy this garden at its best. You need time to explore all the extensive features. The new development of the lower slopes is a big improvement.

(5.0/5)It is amazing that so many plants do well when Madeira is such a windy island and in the middle of the Atlantic ocean.
