The largest of the Borromeo Islands, in Lake Maggiore, has white peacocks and a botanical garden. Flaubert, in 1845, wrote that 'Isola Madre is the most sensual place that I have ever seen in the world'.

A place to feel at home at once!
Quiet walks along the rocky coast of the Lago with its comforting sound of the waves ripple ... wonderful flowering plants ... reticend corners with stone seats in the cool shade ...
Unfortumately in April 2008 there is some garden work under way, so parts of the west coast looked sort of "indisposed"; the great Cypress tree in front of the Villa obviously has problems to recover from strong winds that seem to have hoisted its roots.
Nevertheless - go and enjoy it!

A veritable haven..this is my idea of a really delightful garden. One commences the visit with lovely walk along the southern and estern border , with loads of interesting plants to admire, eventually culminating above an anvcient boathouse from whence a walk into a quintessentially English parkland feel of garden[ big sweeping lawns flanked with fabulous mature trees and bamboo groves , which brings you to the southwest corner of a stunning Villa, the walls festooned with Bougainvillea and Ipomea. The other end of the Villa has an ornamentally decorated and planted Pavilion, from whence you descend down to the deck for boarding the boat.

    It is gorgeous.go visit !
