The site of Horace's Sabine Farm was identified in the early twentieth century. The land was given to Horace by Maecenas and he came here for his famous 'rural retirement' when there was civil war in Rome. Quintus Horatius Flaccus was a friend to the poet Virgil and the Emperor Augustus. His Odes ((23-13 BC) and Epodes (30 BC) were written at this villa and praise the delights and simplicities of country life.
