Herrenchiemsee was built after King Ludwig's visit to Paris. It is an imitation of Versailles - on an island in the middle of an alpine lake. The island is called Herreninsel, which means "Gentleman's Island". The design, by Christian Jank, Franz Seitz, and Georg Dollman was completed in 1878.
