He Yuan (Jixiao Mountain Villa)

The garden was made by a salt merchant in the nineteenth century and contains rockwork, ponds, pavilions and walls inscribed with poetry. The garden's name is a play on the word bamboo. According to an old saying 'A gentleman cannot live without bamboos'. Buildings and other structures enclose the pond. Female guests dined in the hall of Phoenix Facing the Sun and men in the Butterfly Hall.
