Genesee Country Village Gardens

Genesee Country Village & Museum has 13 'heirloom gardens' that show what village life in New York State was like in the 19th-century. The garden at Jones Farm (c. 1820, Orleans, NY) is complete with a 19th-century kitchen garden full of original varieties. Hyde House has a モPicturesqueヤ garden (c. 1870, Friendship, NY) derived from plans for モromantic landscapesヤ appearing in A.J. Downing's 1842 Cottage Residences. MacArthur House (c. 1831, York, NY) has a vegetable and herb specimen garden and a children's garden that allows visitors to discover how children in the early 1800s used gardens as outdoor, hands-on classrooms. Shaker's Trustees' Building (c. 1839, Sonyea, NY) has a medicinal herb garden. Livingston-Backus House (c. 1827, Rochester, NY) has a formal city garden with rectangular beds. The Federal-style garden house is from Cortland, NY (c. 1828). A 19th-century vineyard is under development.
