Gardenvisit Editorial

Fallingwater is one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most celebrated domestic projects. The AIA, in 1991, voted it 'the best all-time work of American architecture'. Yet the real triumph is the integration of architecture with landscape. Were a similar building placed on a street corner in Pittsburgh it would be little more than an oddity. It was designed in 1935 for the Kaufmann family. The construction, using concrete and local materials, projects over the waterfall. Frank Lloyd Wright wrote that 'he loved the site where the house was built and liked to listen to the waterfall. So that was a prime motive in the design.'
