Deeg was the home of India's Jat rulers. Badan Singh was proclaimed ruler in 1722 and made the Purana Mahal (old palace). Surajmal built additional palaces (Nand Bhawan, Gopal Bhawa, Sawan, Bhadon ) around a water garden with walkways, flowerbeds, trees, shrubs, and some 500 fountains fed by a vast tank. The Sawan and Bhadon palaces are designed to resemble barges.
This is a garden in the making and well worth taking a detour for if you are in the area. It's a lovely green oasis after the monsoon, and when I visited (December) there was a lot of improvement and planting work going on.
The palace makes a wonderful backdrop and I'm sure that the when the fountains are operational it's quite stunning .... but nobody could actually tell me when the fountains do come on!!
An interesting city too, but a little off the beaten track, with some interesting roads to reach it!
