    Deserving of a detour by any serious gardener, Appeltern is comprised of a vast series of traditional and contemporary model gardens - most of them the size of a small home garden - each featuring a different combination of hardscaping, planting, outdoor furnishings and the occasional garden art. There are additional displays of building materials. While there is some signage indicating commerical sources, it does not detract from the garden content. A couple of cafes serve simple, inexpensive foods like soups, salads, and sandwiches. Plan a minimum of two hours here; it's easy to spend three or more. My second visit, a year after the first, was as enjoyable as the first.
