The garden was funded by textile magnate Daniel Stowe. It has an Allee Garden, a Scroll Garden, A Ribbon Garden, a Cottage Garden and a Canal Garden. As these names suggest, its style is traditional - not contemporary with the design ideas of the period in which it was made. The layout of the garden is visible on the satellite image if you zoom in on the location map below. The Orchid Conservatory opened in 2008.

Unfortunately, after a good five years of poor management and leadership, this botanical garden has blatantly become over-priced, under-staffed and the gardens look weedy and completely not cared for!
Our development plantings at the front entrance and around the pool look 100X better than this once-outstanding and hopeful garden in this part of the Carolinas.
From what I've been told, all the horticulture staff with talent and experience resigned years ago and no money is going into maintaining the once lush, healthy looking garden beds.
$12 entrance? For what? Leaning trees and annual flowers in a brand new conservatory? Dead and widely spaced flowers outdoors and weeds in ground covers and growing in between walkway bricks?
The "new" woodland walk is sad. Dead new American chestnut trees and weeds.

(1.0/5)This one is worth driving a long way for! Quite stunning gardens, even in mid-winter and the Orchid Conservatory is astounding! See orchid and epiphyte displays that will amaze you.
Outside you will find a wonderful series of garden "rooms" leading off the central Canal Garden.
A lot of thought has gone into these gardens and they really are worth making a detour for, especially when you see them against the backdrop of a Carolina blue sky!
