Cypress Gardens (SC)

Gardenvisit Editorial

This antebellum estate, formerly known as Dean Hall, had a swamp which was used to flood the rice plantations. It had a formal garden which fell into disrepair during the Civil War. The estate was purchased by B R Kittredge in 1909 and made into a picturesque swamp garden featuring exotic azaleas, magnolias, camellias and bulbs. The brilliant colours of the flowers are seen against the gray cypress tress and reflected in the brown swamp water. The scene can be viewed from footpaths or flat-bottomed boats. The plan is Picturesque and the planting Gardenesque.
