Gardenvisit Editorial

A medieval moated castle. It became a renaissance garden in the seventeenth century and was extended in the eighteenth century, but did not become a baroque garden. The centerpiece of the estate is great basin, 450m in length. It has the still-moated chateau at one end and large statue of Neptune at the other end. The Ligne family has owned the estate for over 500 years and the Prince de Ligne published a book on the Beloeil estate in 1786.

Having read about this garden in a book from 1999, my husband and I went there this fall (2008). In the space of 8 some odd years, this garden has fallen into serious decline and is not worth the visit. The wonderful water features are dry, the statuary is crumbling and many of the elements that make it special are no longer tended. For example: A wonderful room of hornbeams now has huge holes where plants once were, so it is no longer a walled area. All the water features are in serious neglect or are not even with water. We saw a dead bird in one and the rest are completely empty. This is truly sad as I had some high expectations for this wonderful historic garden
