Park and Schloss Branitz

Gardenvisit Editorial

This is the estate which Prince Puckler-Muskau bought when he was forced to leave Bad Muskau. Still working on English precedents, he made a Serpentine Lake, a Pyramid Lake, a Blue Garden, a Smithy Garden, a Rose Mount, a Moon Mount and Island of Venus, a light iron Kiosk and a series of waterways. It is a good example of the Mixed Style, applied in Germany. The Prince and his wife lie at rest in a pyramid tomb, in the lake, with an inscription from the Koran: 'Graves are the mountain tops of a distant, lovely land'.

This Branitz is really like an English landscape park - and it is better than most of them.
