Bom Jesus do Monte ('Good Jesus of the Mount') is a sanctuary garden with a famous pilgrimage staircase. It derives from the Christian story of the Stations of the Cross, and leads to a church. The stairs, built in granite with white plaster work, are set amongst lush vegetation. There are also fountains and topiary.
Climbing a very long flight of steps is a religious experience. Its like the long hard climb through life - with a little view of a great heaven at the end of the climb.
