Bom Jesus do Monte, meaning 'Good Jesus of the Mount' in Portuguese, is a sanctuary garden with a famous pilgrimage staircase (visible on the satellite image if you zoom in on the location map below). It derives from the Christian story of the Stations of the Cross, and leads to a church. The stairs, built in granite with white plaster work, are set amongst lush vegetation. There are also fountains and topiary.
Climbing a very long flight of steps is a religious experience. Its like the long hard climb through life - with a little view of a great heaven at the end of the climb.
