Other open structures present a more rustic character, with thatched roofs and delicately framed ceilings, and some of these have two sides partly filled in with a low railing or paneling, which forms the back to fixed interior benches. Hexagonal and octagonal Arbours may be observed, with cusping between the heads of the pillars, and balustrade-work below, displaying a Chinese character in their ornamentation. The arrangement of the fixed seats inside is generally irregular, a symmetrical distribution being in most cases avoided. A number of Garden Arbours are illustrated in Plate XXIV. Figures 26, 27, and others scattered through the text, show the arrangement of these structures in landscape gardens.
