Brick and stone enclosing walls are of quite modern introduction. The Japanese have never been accustomed to employ solid walls in gardens as a means of cultivating wall-fruit or climbing plants, wall-fruit being unknown in the country as such, and the creepers being grown upon light trellises and open fences.
