Gateways and fences

Previous - Next

So fascinatingly interesting in variety are garden gateways and fences that it will be impossible to deal with them here adequately. The account must necessarily be brief and what is left unsaid may be gathered from the accompanying illustrations. For garden entrances, usually roofed gateways are constructed with swinging doors. The simplest one consists of two posts with gates roughly woven with bamboo. Some gates are braided with thin strips of wood, while others are of planks roughly hewn, which creates an interesting pattern when partially wet with rain.
