As modern landscape gardening owes its existence almost entirely to the English, we must take a rapid glance at the early condition of the art in Great Britain, and its subsequent development to the present time. It would appear to be an undeniable fact in the history of ornamental gardening that, from the time of William the Conqueror down to the latter part of the reign of Queen Anne, and the beginning of that of George I., nothing was considered garden scenery except it was in the formal and geometric style.
