Lillington Gardens

This estate was one of the first attempts in London to break away from the idea of blocks in high rise flats whilst continuing to build at high density. The design of the central spaces, though conceived on several levels, is strong and simple; the brick of the buildings is carried into the paving and retaining walls, the ground is subtly contoured and the use of trees and shrubs is bold. Access balconies are enlivened with shrub planting, though not everything has survived as planted. Architects and Landscape Architects were Darbourne & Darke for the City of Westminster. Vauxhall Bridge Road, SW1.
