Woolwich Park

After winning the competition, Whitetlaw Turkington landscape architects were commissioned to design the park in 1997. A generous series of ramped steps, with dramatic columnar lights, flows from Central Woolwich towards the river. It is a well-proportion and well-detailed space. But it lacks activity, probably because the London Borough of Greenwich did not have a strategic open space plan when it commissioned the landscape architects. Good landscape design enjoys the Vitruvian virtues of commodity firmness and delight.

The scale of the landscape design for Woolwich Park is proportionate to the scale of the river, but it is more an aesthetic design than a social design or an ecological design.
