Park Lane, W1

The Park Lane boundary to Hyde Park has been radically altered to provide extra traffic lanes and massive roundabouts at Marble Arch and Hyde Park Corner. Mounding has been carried out on a limited scale to protect the Park from the traffic, but it is regrettable that the excavations from the underground car park were not used to implement Sir Geoffrey Jellicoe's proposals for 'an earth companion for the Serpentine'. A mound, in the form of a giant serpent, would have created 'a sunny, sheltered, green amphitheatre for those who now sit exposed to wind and noise'.
