Abercrombie, Sir Patrick. An architect, landscape architect and town planner, Abercrombie was responsible for one of the greatest open space plans ever prepared for a capital city: the 1943-4 County of London Plan and Greater London Plan. The main proposal was for a great web of greenspace interlacing the entire London region. Though never adopted as an official plan, it is being implemented, year-by-year, by a host of local authorities and voluntry groups with an interest in London Planning. Lea Valley Regional Park. Agar, Madeline Author of a book on Garden design, published in 19.., and director of the garden design course at Swanley College.(Swanley College was absorbed into Hadlow College which now offers a BA Hons Garden Design in conjunction with the University of Greenwich). Sylvia Crowe and Brenda Colvin were both her students and both became Presidents of the Institute of Landscape Architects (now the Landscape Institute). Wimbledon Common Memorial. Bridgeman, Charles.(d 1738). Sometimes claimed as an early practitioner of the English landscape style, Bridgeman is best seen as a follwer of the Anglo-Dutch baroque. Kensington Gardens.
Brown, Lancelot 'Capability'. England's most famous landscape designer gained his nick name from his frequent comment that a place had 'capabilities'. The leading features of his style were serpentine curves, tree belts, sinuous lakes and circular clumps of trees. Syon Park

Chambers, Sir William. (1723-96) English architect who propagated the taste of Chinoiserie in English gardens. Kew Gardens..
Colvin, Brenda. In the 1960s, Brenda Colvin and Sylvia Crowe shared offices in Gloucester Place. Both were students of Madeline Agar; both became well-known; both became presidents of the Institute of Landscape Architects (later the Landscape Institute). Brenda Colvin wrote a book on Land use and landscape and founded the firm of Colvin Moggridge. Wimbledon Common Memorial.
Crowe, Dame Sylvia. Landscape architect to the Forestry Commission, president of the ILA and author of many books, including Garden design, Tomorrow's landscape and The landscape of roads and The landscape of power. Commonwealth Institute.

GLC Parks Department From 1967-1986 this department was responsible for stragetic open space planning in London. Since its demise, there has been no strategic open space planning authority in London, though the London Planning Advisory Committee published a number of reports. Jellicoe, Sir Geoffrey. One of the most famous landscape designers of the twentieth century - but he has pitifully little work in the London area. Guiness Hills. Hemel Hempsted New Town. Lancaster, Michael. A landscape architect and architect. Head of landscape architecture at the Univesity of Greenwich (then Thames Polytechnic) from 1975 to 1992. He was joint editor, with Patrick Goode and Geoffrey Jellicoe, of the Oxford Companion to gardens and has written two books on the use of colour in outdoor design: Britain in view and Colourscape.Information about his interest in colour is available from the colour group's website (www.colordome.com). Paxton, Joseph. A famous nineteenth century designer. Appointed head gardener at Chatsworth as a young man, he became world-famous as designer of the Crystal Palace. It was built at Hyde Park and them moved to Sydenham.
