Bryanston Square and Montague Square Gardens

Bryanston Square was built 1811-1821and named after the landowner's estate: Edward Berkeley Portman, Viscount Portman, of Bryanston, near Blandford, in Dorset. It is 'long and thin' rather than square and has some of the most beautiful London Planes (Platanus × hispanica, syn. Platanus × acerifolia) in Central London. The high terraces appear to have given them protection and encouraged a giraffe-like height and elegance, married to the architecture. The garden remains private and continues to be used for Peter Pan type gatherings of mothers and children. This must be a great compensation for living in an appartment.

The nearby Montague Square is similar in use and character.
