In 2005 the Clays Lane site for the Olympic Village was used as student accommodation for the University of East London (the red brick tower and houses) and by travellers (gipseys). The site is to be cleared and re-built as an Olympic Village.

It is a long time since any high-quality public housing was built in the UK to let us hope the opportunity will be taken to build a real example of sustainable housing:

green transport links with the surrounding area and, via the adjoining velodrome, to Central London

1. every square milimetre of roof used for either vegetation or solar panels
2. the site should export electricity to the national electicity grid
3. very high standards of thermal insulation
4. durable re-cyclable materials
5. all the outdoor space to be useful and beautiful
