Why not undertake a period of voluntary work before or after a university course? Quite apart from the good you will do, volunteering is a wonderful way to gain hands-on experience of conservation and design. You learn about the fundamental relationship between people and places, which matters so much more than the aesthetic dimension of design. It is also a good way to travel abroad and become familiar with an overseas country, its environment, its people, its wildlife and its nature conservation priorities. There are opportunities in developed countries, less developed countries and underdeveloped countries. If the voluntary work is done after graduation, you can donate your professional skills as well as your time. If the voluntary work is done before joining a course, then you begin your education as a more mature person.
