The United States of America began building spas in the 1850s and the making of day spas began in the early twentith century. Elizabeth Arden, now famous for cosmetics, is believed to have opened the first day spa in 1910. It offered manicures, facials and 'Arden Wax'.
American firms have also taken the lead in manufacturing hot tub spas for installation in private gardens. They can be sited like garden pools and used for family relaxation after a hard day at the office.
Jacuzzi is a brand name for a hot tub system invented by an Italian-American family. Roy Jacuzzi invented the whirlpool bath pump in 1956.
