Teak furniture - review

Landscape and Garden Product Directory

Teak is a tropical hardwood of greater durability than any timber from temperate forests, including oak. Teak is used to make garden.chairs, tables, seats and benches. Teak is so durable that it can even be used for planters. The worry about using teak is that much of it is sourced from the clearance of virgin tropical forests. Some supplies come from sustainable teak plantations owned and managed by the government agencies. Garden designers who wish to sustain their consciences should check that any furniture they buy comes from sustainable teak plantations and not from forest clearance.

The disadvantages of teak are largely sentimental:

  • teak does not have the associations of 'native oak'
  • teak has a warm reddish-yellow colour which is alien to gardens in the temperate zone
