Herbaceous border planting design

The idea of planting a 'border' of ornamental hardy herbaceous plants appears to have originated in nineteenth century England. If so, the circumstances of its invention were (1) a continuing distaste for what was known as 'formal', in the sense of geometrical, planting (2) the gardenesque style of planting design.
