The idea of designing gardens as flowering orchards derives from the hot and arid parts of Central and South Asia. In hot dry weather the pleasantest place to be is woodland - the shade makes it cool and convection currents make it breezy. If the orchard is also sweet-smelling and full of choice fruits, then this is the pleasantest place to be. To give privacy and protection the flowering orchard needs to be walled.
