Avenue planting design

The planting of ceremonial avenues began in the ancient world and has fallen from popularity only in unsettled times (eg Europe's dark ages) when there has been a lack of central authority. Archaeological remains of avenue planting have been found in Ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and in Persia there are carvings of avenue trees at Persepolis.
