Cycling

Planning for cyclists is good but there are faults in this cycleway through the middle of Greenwich Park:

  • pedestrians stray onto the cycle  track and it is often used by skateboarders
  • expecting the track to function as a 2-way route is dangerous and  unrealistic (uphill traffic would have to cross the road to use the short section of marked cycleway)
  • cyclists coming down the hill, at speed, are expected to stop suddenly or cross the dangerous setted channel into the path of vehicles coming from behind, usually  exceeding the speed limit

About 20 cyclists use the road for every cyclist who uses the track.

The chicane on the east boundary of Greenwich Park was intended to 'calm' the traffic. For cyclists, it is dangerous and inconvenient. For drivers, it is infuriating.

You are right about all those things and they have been changed for the better. There is a new uphill only cycle path, on the left, and downhill cyclists are advised to stay on the road which has been made into a 20mph one meaning that bikes and cars do roughly the same speed.

Now we need an East/West cycle path in the park for cyclists who want to head in those directions without going round the fiendish dual carriagewayed Greenwich one way system.

Um, what chicane? I cycle through the park most days and have never noticed a chicane.
