The Calthorpe Project is a 1.2 acre 'organic community garden for local people'. The site was scheduled for office development but after fierce local opposition. It was purchased by Borough of Camden and opened in 1984. It has quiet areas, water features , seating, flower beds, glasshouses, a swamp, a meeting area and a small restaurant. The great strength of the project comes from its management by community members (funded by the Borough). This results in a use and character which is more sensitive to the local community than a typical municipal park.Community gardens do not receive nearly as much official support as they deserve but some of them flourish. The landscape character of the Calthorpe Project is more human, in scale and details, than a standard municipal park.
