The Garden Bridge can make an important contribution to the Thames Landscape Strategy. It follows a long tradition of building bridges, in gardens, which are useful to pedestrians and make a visual contribution to the design. There are other examples of green bridges, as at Stourhead, but making a garden on a bridge is unusual. Ornamental bridges have an important role in East Asian gardens, as at Katsura in Kyoto and the Imperial Summer Palace in Bejing.
