Cycling on the Isle of Dogs

Below, would anyone take the 'diversion'?

Between 1980 and 2000 the Isle of Dogs was the largest construction site in the UK. The works included:

  1. a major office development at Canary Wharf
  2. large housing developments
  3. two new railway lines (the DLR and the Jubilee Line)
  4. a section of the most expensive road built in the UK
  5. a system of cycle routes

Items 1-4 were successful. The cycle routes built in this period are a disgraceful faulure. Lying through their teeth, all governments boasted of their sustainable policies during this period. The bicycle is the Great Green Machine. Provision for its use on the Isle of Dogs compares with the availability of food in a concentration camp.

Although I don't live in the area I cycle through it from time to time. I totally agree with your comments. The probablem is the country now has no money thanks to the squandering years of T Blair, there is no political 'capital' to be made out of improving cycle facilities, and all politicians are car mad.
Thank god the price of petrol is going up & up, and parking spaces are becoming less & less.
