The Thames Policy Area in Central London can be a special zone in which green living walls receive priority in planning. The landscape aim is to create a public realm which is green, quiet, beautiful and with biodiverse wildlife. Green living walls fall into two main categories

Extensive green living walls: on which vegetation (eg ivy, creepers and climbers) are planted in the ground and clad walls without the use of irrigation equipment

Intensive green living walls: on which vegetation (usually herbaceous plants) are planted on special structures and maintained with irrigation equipment
