Its scope was the known world. The Encyclopedia of Gardening had over 800 illustrations and was structured into four sections: horticulture, floriculture, arboriculture, and landscape gardening. As Hooker remarked of his 1830s Arboretum Britannicum, there was not another man in Europe who could have done it. Loudon was the only man who had the talent, the knowledge and the energy for such a monumental task.
