In 1813, Gothenburg was a thriving port and the second largest city in Sweden. It was the primary port on Sweden's west coast and a major gateway for international trade. Gothenburg was home to the Swedish East India Company, and to many artists, musicians, and writers. Sweden had rejoined the anti-French coalition in 1812 and benefited from the increased demand for Swedish exports.
