‘Fort William, on the south bank of the river, is said to be stronger than any other fortress in India. It reflects great honour on the talents of Colonel Polier, the engineer. The buildings on all sides of the park in which it stands are of a large scale, allowing that free circulation of fresh air which is so necessary in Bengal.’ This is a quote from The Claudians: gardens, landscapes, reason and faith: John Claudius Loudon and Claudius Buchanan, Tom Turner (Kindle, 2024)
Claudius Buchanan was the Vice Principal of Fort William College in Calcutta. It was located inside the Fort William complex. It was established in 1800 within the boundaries of the fort until its closure in 1854. The fort had been built by the British East India Company in the late 17th century and served as the company's headquarters in Bengal. The college was established in 1800 by Lord Wellesley and aimed to train British civil servants in Indian languages and culture. Today, the building is the Headquarters of the Eastern Command of the Indian Army. It is a highly restricted military zone and not accessible to the public.
