This description is from 1807: ‘Ffestiniog, a village in Merionethshire, North Wales, is situated near the north-western extremity of the county, at the head of the Cwm Maentwrog, one of the finest vales in Wales, being highly cultivated, intersected by the Dwyryd, and bounded by lofty mountains covered with tall oaks. Near the village are two very grand waterfalls called Cynfael. Near Ffestiniog runs the Roman highway.’
