‘Claudius Buchanan wrote home as soon as he reached Calcutta: “My dear Mother, Saugor Island was the first land we saw after leaving Madras. The captain told us that it is full of tigers and that swimming is the best way to escape from them. Also known as Sagar Island, this is a beautiful island located at the mouth of the Ganges River in the Bay of Bengal, approximately 80 miles south of Kolkata (Calcutta). It's part of the Sundarbans delta. It was once a major trading post for the British East India Company.
Moored in the Bay of Bengal, into which the River Ganges and the Hoogley both flow, Claudius Buchanan's first view of Bengal was Saugor Island. He saw wild jungle, wild animals and native mud huts.
